Review & Description

THE ICARUS CHRONICLES: FLIGHT OF THE HERO is a gritty, realistic YA novel about a fourteen-year-old boy who must become the hero of his own life before he can be anyone else's.When Dane Winter undertakes the dangerous job of rescuing his childhood crush from kidnappers, he learns that being a superhero isn't anything like the stories he reads in his comics. Full of near-future technology, sword-play and off-road racing, ICARUS is an action / adventure novel sure to appeal to young teens and 'tweens. While I write everything from novels to chapter books, I've had the most success with picture books. Last year, I sold a picture book to Tricycle Press/Random House, and this year, another one of my picture books is under consideration by a different publisher. Other publishing accomplishments include a play for the high school market (JD Drama Publishing) and several non-fiction contributions (Gryphon House). Additionally, I've had numerous short stories published in ezines and one of my middle grade novels was a finalist in The Writer’s League of Texas manuscript contest. This plot is among those most unique I have read and its written fairly well. I love the idea of the robotic dogs and laser tags, a world where a rich boy with an allergy to the sun can find his own place to belong. I also liked Iris and I would really want to see where the story goes.Overall, I think you have a good story here for a boy's YA novel. There really isn't enough good YA fiction for boys, especially in the 14 and under category, so I think you're on the right track. So far you have a good plot and you're developing your characters nicely. The writing is well done and age-appropriate, too. Read more
